U16 National Teams, Monaco & Adversity

Netherlands · Monaco · 2022–2023

Basketball careers rarely follow a straight line. This was the season that taught Efe how to keep walking anyway.

Basketball careers rarely follow a straight line.

Just as Efe's development seemed to be accelerating after his outstanding season in Valencia, life presented him with his first truly difficult challenge.

The disappointment surrounding Turkey's Under-16 National Team did not simply end with the announcement of the squad. It affected him far more deeply than anyone realized.

For several days after learning he had not been selected, Efe almost completely withdrew into himself. He spoke very little. His family immediately sensed that something was wrong. Looking back, they believe the emotional impact was far greater than anyone initially understood.

Instead of allowing disappointment to define him, however, another opportunity unexpectedly appeared.

A second door opens

After discussions within the family, they decided to contact the Dutch Basketball Federation. Efe also held Dutch nationality. The response was immediate. There was no hesitation. The federation welcomed him and invited him to join the Dutch Under-16 National Team.

For Efe, this was never about choosing one country over another. He loved both sides of his family. He simply wanted the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level available to him.

His mother travelled from Spain to the Netherlands. Efe travelled from Turkey. Together they discovered a completely different national-team environment. The Dutch federation operated with far fewer financial resources. Parents contributed significantly to travel expenses. The organization relied heavily on passion rather than budget. It was a very different reality. Yet everyone made Efe feel welcome from the very first day.

An invisible opponent

Shortly after arriving in the Netherlands, something unexpected happened. The emotional stress of the previous weeks appeared to take a physical toll. Efe developed shingles (herpes zoster), an illness that required medical treatment and significantly affected his physical condition.

Pain appeared across one side of his body. His energy dropped dramatically. Simple daily activities became more difficult. Training became an enormous challenge. Yet Efe remained determined to continue preparing for the European Championship.

His coaches eventually learned about the illness. His teammates supported him. Although physically weakened, he refused to give up. Looking back, his family believes that period demonstrated a level of mental resilience that statistics can never measure.

The European Championship

Despite everything that had happened during the previous weeks, Efe travelled with the Dutch National Team to the 2022 FIBA Under-16 European Championship.

Ironically, the tournament brought another emotional moment. The Dutch team and the Turkish team stayed in the same hotel. Old friends crossed paths. Familiar faces appeared everywhere. Basketball often creates moments no one could have predicted.

Unfortunately, Efe never entered the tournament in full physical condition. The illness had reduced his strength and preparation. He tried to help the team whenever possible. But after only a few games, another setback arrived. He suffered the first significant muscular injury of his basketball career. A hamstring injury forced him out of the remainder of the tournament.

For a player who had always relied on training, improvement and consistency, watching from the sidelines became one of the hardest experiences of his young life. Instead of competing, he focused on supporting his teammates until the tournament concluded.

Monaco

Following the European Championship, Efe moved to AS Monaco Basket. The opportunity appeared exciting. Earlier that year, Monaco had expressed enormous enthusiasm. During his visit, coaches immediately told the family that they wanted to build an important part of the future around him. The project felt perfect.

Returning to the Principality also carried personal meaning. Monaco was the place where Efe's father had grown up. The family believed they had found another ideal environment.

Unfortunately, reality turned out differently. Before the season even began, coaching changes altered many of the original plans. The coach who had recruited Efe was no longer responsible for his development. The project the family had accepted no longer existed in the same form.

The most difficult season

The consequences of the summer became immediately visible. Because of the hamstring injury suffered during the European Championship, Efe started the Monaco season weeks behind schedule. For the first time in his life, a serious injury prevented him from training and competing normally. The timing could hardly have been worse.

While teammates were building chemistry, Efe was focused on rehabilitation. Instead of becoming discouraged, he approached recovery exactly as he approached everything else. As another opportunity to improve.

Unable to train normally with the team, he and his father created an alternative routine. Almost every morning before school, they arrived at a private fitness facility as soon as it opened. For roughly two hours, they worked on strength, athleticism, mobility and vertical explosiveness. The objective was simple. If basketball had temporarily been taken away, they would improve everything else.

That difficult period ultimately became one of the most productive physical development phases of Efe's career. His athleticism improved significantly. His vertical jump increased. His body became stronger. His discipline became even greater.

Choosing growth over frustration

As the season progressed, Efe gradually returned to competition. Although the circumstances never unfolded exactly as originally expected, he continued working. He never allowed disappointment to become an excuse. Instead, it became another lesson.

Every country had taught him something different. Turkey had built his fundamentals. America had expanded his skills. Spain had taught him basketball. Monaco taught him resilience.

By the end of the season, another important decision approached. The family once again faced a familiar question. Where would Efe continue developing most effectively?

Several trusted basketball friends recommended one destination above all others. TOFAŞ Bursa. The recommendation came from respected coaches who believed TOFAŞ possessed one of Europe's finest player development programs. The family arranged a visit. After the very first workout, the response was immediate. The coaching staff wanted Efe to stay.

Another chapter was about to begin.

Sometimes the greatest progress comes during the seasons that appear the most difficult. Monaco tested Efe in ways basketball never had before. It also prepared him for the opportunity that would ultimately shape his transition from promising prospect to professional player. That opportunity was called TOFAŞ.
